FAQs

Q?What will Converge students do during weekends & holidays?
A.

Well, you will be working on weekends, so your weekends will be Mondays and Tuesdays.
You will have a week break for Thanksgiving and Easter. You will have approximately two weeks off for Christmas.
Outside of that, we are a place where people come when they are on holiday, so odds are that we will be working during most holidays of the year.

Q?Can I get college credit for my time in Converge?
A.

Absolutely! We have students that have received credits for their participation in this program. But, this is your responsibility. We will give you everything you need, but you must do the legwork of meeting with your dean or advisor to make the transfer of credit happen.

Q?Is this for former Sandy Cove staff only?
A.

No, not at all! We do encourage a lot of past staff to participate simply because they have knowledge of how we work and our existing guidelines. But, most of the Converge students have never been on our staff before.

Q?Why is it called Converge?
A.

The President and Director of Program Ministries wanted it to be a program where Theory and Practice Converge. It reminds us of James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Q?What are the dates of the Converge?
A.

Converge starts the third week in August (following our Summer Programs), and concludes the first week of the following August.

Q?What is the workload like?
A.

The workload can be very exhausting at times and easy at other times. A typical work week will look like this:

Mon-Tues – Days off

Wed-Thurs – Classes (10-15 hours)

Fri-Sun – working in all departments (25-35 hours)

Q?Why should I put off getting a job or school for this program?
A.

We want to encourage you to make a wise decision. This program is for those who either want to give themselves a year of experience in the hospitality ministry, or want help in finding the direction that God is calling them to follow. Converge may be the best way for you to figure out what you want to do with your future, and not incur a lot of college debt in the process. The benefit of Converge is that the program will equip you with knowledge and skills that you can bring to the marketplace. Converge wants you to achieve what God has planned for you. If you are certain of what you want to do with your life, and need a college degree to get you there, then by all means you should go. Or, if you have the opportunity to start the career that you believe is right for you, then by all means you should do that.

Q?What are the options for paying tuition?
A.

There are three options available:

1. Pay in full.

2. Pay as you go. You will earn money while serving our guests throughout the year. You can pay that back to Sandy Cove as tuition. Also, Sandy Cove will scholarship you $1,500 if you work as summer staff at least six weeks the summer before you join Converge. We call it a Converge Summer Staff Scholarship!

3. Raise support for your tuition. This option must be initiated and undertaken by you and you must raise the support on your own. We will give you some fundraising ideas but we will not raise support for you.

Q?What should i do about my other expenses?
A.

Converge interns are not allowed to work outside the program. We recommend students cut back on their discretionary spending before they enter the program. Fiscal discipline (big words that mean balancing your budget) will be part of the learning process. If interns have outside expenses that must be covered, they can work additional hours if available. If this does not provide enough funds, then students will need to make outside arrangements to cover those expenses.

Q?What will classes be like?
A.

Classes have three focus areas: Biblical, Leadership, and Professional. Within each area you will go through the process of answering the following questions:

Who am I?

Who am I in Christ?

What am I going to do about it?

How will I DO IT?

Classes will be held 10-15 hours a week, and you will be evaluated on your engagement, involvement and effort. You will not be graded in these classes, but your effort will be monitored and you may be asked to redo assignments if we sense you have not given your best.

Q?When can I apply? What are the requirements?
A.

You may apply anytime, but August is the cutoff for accepting students for the upcoming year.
